Genius Sports Expands AFA Partnership with Semi-Automated Offside Technology in Argentina

Genius Sports is expanding its long-standing partnership with the Argentine Football Association (AFA) to introduce semi-automated offside technology across Argentina’s top-flight football competition, the Liga Profesional de Fútbol.

The system will combine camera-based player tracking, artificial intelligence and automated visualisations to help video assistant referees assess offside incidents more quickly and communicate decisions more clearly to fans.

How the technology will work

Computer-vision cameras installed in top-flight stadiums will track player positions and movement. The data will be processed through Genius Sports’ GeniusIQ platform, which is designed to identify the moment the ball is played, assess the relevant player positions and provide visual support for VAR officials.

The system is also expected to generate three-dimensional graphics that broadcasters and stadium screens can use to explain offside decisions. According to Genius Sports, its technology has reduced average offside decision times by more than 30% across several major competitions where it has been deployed.

The company said the technology will begin with the Liga Profesional’s Clausura final on December 12, before being rolled out fully across the competition ahead of the 2027 Torneo Clausura, scheduled to begin in July.

Beyond refereeing

The agreement could create opportunities beyond match officiating. The same tracking infrastructure may support enhanced broadcasts, coaching analysis and new data-driven experiences for clubs, media partners and supporters.

For Argentine football, the deployment represents another step in the modernisation of match technology and the presentation of refereeing decisions. For Genius Sports, it expands the company’s footprint in a major football market and strengthens its position as a technology supplier to national associations and professional leagues.
